Sailing Oeral Thûs from Harlingen
|
|||

The
Wadden Sea is now the favorite 'sailing world' for Oeral Thûs, our
Frysian skûtsje. The tidal shoals, the creeks and currents guarantee
eventful sailing. Add to that Aeolus' whimsicalness here and surprise
is there. What follows is the story of a sailing trip, summer 2010, from Harlingen to Greetsiel and Leer. A distance of about 85 nautical miles ( ca.150 km). |

Harlingen - Lauwersmeer |
|||
The
journey begins on June 8th in Harlingen, our home port. Over the Van
Harinxma canal the sail takes us to Leeuwarden. From there we sail up
the pretty
Dokkumer Ee, meandering through the Frisian graslands north, then east
to the Lauwersmeer. Thanks to Friesland's excellent bridge and lock
services it is a days journey. Many years ago Leeuwarden bordered on
the east side (Leeward) of the Middelsee, an inlet from the Wadden Sea.
The Dokkummer Ee was a Wadden channel. In Birdaard while tying up to wait for the bridge opening our water tank lid dropped off the aft deck. It was a bronze bicycle bell son Abel found many years ago. It served lying loose on the watertank pipe never budging even in high seas. We close the tank temporarily with a tapered wooden plug. Old fortified Dokkum like many Dutch cities is most impressive from the defense moat. It is surrounded by ramparts with at six points protruding bastions. Modern Dokkum provides free internet to passing ships. |
|||
Via

We
enter the Lauwersmeer through
the lock Dokkumer Nieuwe Zijlen (literally the new lock of Dokkum) The Lauwersmeer (Lauwers lake) with its many marshes is a peaceful bird paradise. We tie up in the marshland along one of Friesland's many (free) Marrekrite mooring places. Gorgeous Grebes, young riding on their back, float along side Oeral Thûs. The peaceful environment tempts us to stay. It was 35 miles to here. |

De
volgende stap vergt zorgvuldige planning.
The
next phase requires carefull planning. We need high tide to cross the
shallows and want to take advantage of the upcoming tide to cross
those areas as early as possible. Also crossing the busy Eems river in
the Wadden Sea with a skûtsje one must avoid wind against tide. When
winds are 5 Bft or more especially NW winds can be hazardous. Tide
against wind causes steep breaking waves. With favorable winds and tide one can sail the 50 miles to Greetsiel from here on one tidal wave. |
|||
12
Juni vertrekken we, met een
gunstig tij,
It is
June12. The weather
forecast is good, 4 Bft NW. The tide is favorable with high tide Lauwersoog at 11:15 am and high tide reaching the Eemsharbour at 12.25, an hour and 10 minutes later. Up at 6 am, we enter lock Lauwersoog at 7:00, and at 7:30, out on the Wadden Sea, the sails are up. The incoming tide and breeze sweep us eastward toward the shallows. Then, at 8:05 the KNMI weather office forecasts increasing NW winds up to 6 Bft. An hour later the Eems river traffic control issues a warning for NW 7 Bft. Crossing the Eems river with 7 Bft is not our choice. So we decide to make an anchor stopover to await better weather. |
|||
| Checking
the sandbanks locations on the map we choose a spot just past
Noordpolderzijl, with one shallow area still between us and the Eems,
near buoy ZOL 34. Here high sand shoals protect us from the North-
westerlies. Birds flocking by from shore toward the shoals and back to shore indicate the water level and the drying and flooding around us. Close to Oeral Thûs mussel and oyster banks appear. In a small net we hang a meal overboard to clear them, inside and out, of sand. Lying here we have no problem braving the 6 Bft winds and waves. |

A
beautiful sunrise, so typical of the Wadden Sea at low tide, welcomes
us the next morning. The wind has died down to WNW 4 Bft, ideal for
Oeral Thûs to head East.We raise the 55 kilo fisherman anchor and the
sails. After crossing the shallows we rapidly cross, with still upcoming tide, the 6 miles on the West Eems towards the Ranzel Beacon. |
||

For
the first time in the twenty
years that we sail this area we are
boarded by a combined force of Dutch and German Coastguard. They are on
a cooperation training. As Europe removes its inland border
controls
it intensifies the external ones. The coastguard is expanding. Just past the Randzel Beacon as we approach shallow water they are finished checking our papers. The East Eems is also an ice cream sail with this breeze. Only three and a half hours after raising the anchor we are in the channel entrance to Greetsiel's new lock. Great Yellow Geert is guarding the spot. The tall lock bridge is upright indicating the lock is in operation. |
||
Greetsiel
deden we voor het
eerst aan in 1991 toen het nog een
getijdehaven was.

Our
first trip here, in 1991, Greetsiel was still a tidal harbour. Then
with the sun setting behind us, we slowly sailed 5 miles of meandering
creek upstream against the outgoing tide, between reeds and cows
grazing on the saltmarsh. Soon after
docking the harbour fell dry with ducks paddling in the soft black
mire. Now, a high dike encompasses a lake and a large area of shoals and marshes. The diked Leybucht has been converted to a protected water reservoir. Fortunately it is again a true bird eldorado to wading fowl. |

Ondanks

The
lock and dikes allows shrimp fishing kotters to continue using
Greetsiel as harbour almost tide independently. Thus it
remains a
picturesque, charming and lively fishing town. Part of the fleet is
still of wood and we like mooring in this picturesque harbour, with a
good view of Gretchen (click

||
Vanuit
Hier was
ooit
On
bike to the The lost garden,
we find ourselves
immersed in the piracy history of Osterburg near Groothusen. The age
and stories of this garden are sensed in a giant oak tree with a 5
meter circumference. Three fortified dwelling mounds stood here
connected to the Wadden sea bij a sea channel. It was a refuge for
outlaws and buccaneers. Especially passing Hansa trading vessels were
targeted. Thus back in the 14th century the Hamburgers together with a
clan-leader from Greetsiel, burned the fortifications. Only after a
complete surrender to the authority of Greetsiel were the families
allowed to resettle their mounds. |
|||
's
Avonds,
Back
in Greetsiel, after dusk
one by one the shrimpers leave towards
the lock. Their Sunday-rest is over. The tide is rising. Time to go
fishing. At 11 pm we listen to the late 24hr mariners weather forecast: all ships all ships all ships, because tomorrow we want to sail on northeastward over the Ostfrisian Wadden Sea. Forecast is a strong breeze from the North East. We tuck in hoping for a more favorable morning forecast. |

zeilend de Eems op |
sailing up the Eems |
|||
hoever we Duitsland in komen. |
June.15th,
with a wind 7 to 8 Bft blowing from the NE the coming week, continuing
our sail
eastward over the Wadden Sea is out of the question. Tempted by the
unknown legends of witte wieven, pirates and goldtreasures of
Emsburen we decide to sail up the Eems river. We have no schedule to
meet. The trip itself is the reason. Not having traveled up this tidal river past Emden before we want to use every available minute of the ingoing tide. The Leybucht lock operates from 10:23 am today. The lock schedule is from 4hrs before until 3 hrs after High Tide Nordeney Riffgat, today at 2:23 pm. The bridge then is upright and visible from miles around. So at 10:20 we are at the lock. Out on the Wadden Sea a fresh breeze of about 20 knots from the north greets us. Ideal for us today to head up river with wind and tide. Liesbeth raises the double reefed main. Then up goes the jib. Bij 11:00 am Oeral Thûs is breaching the waves towards the Ooster Eems leaving a foaming wake. Bye, bye Pilsumer lighthouse. |
|||
Then, having reached the Ooster Eems we head SW with the current. The wind comes in from starboard aft, Oeral Thus favorite spot. Thanks to the Northerly wind and the tide there is plenty of water and we sail a straight compass course over channels and tidal sand banks to where the Eems estuary narrows. We stay well to the East of the main shipping channel up to Knock. Here this side is wide and the current strong.
| Continuous dredging is done near Emden and Delfzijl to keep the Eems at the required water depth. The dredgings are spewed out again further down where the river widens.
Ter
over.
Goed uitkijken voor de snelle veerboten. We denken aan de
grote
When
we cross the Dollard we think of the score of twenty seven
drowned villages that once were where now only water, silt and
sand
remains. Since the middle ages many floods have occurred here. |
|||
Ruim
klik voor vergroten click to enlarge |
Well
before we reach the long
dam along the Geiserucken, where there is less space outside the
shipping channel, we start hugging the starboard side just outside of
the channel. That way we avoid the in and out traffic at the
Emden Harbours. A few years earlier we were taught a seamanship-lesson here. We were making the brief crossing from Emden to Delfzijl when a heavy summer thunderstorm with extremely blinding rainfall and high winds came upon us. Buoys were invisible. Even reading the compass at arms length away was not possible. Rapidly whipped up waves made steering Oeral Thûs with her flat bottom and shallow rudder very difficult. When twenty minutes later the nightmare cleared an ocean liner doomed up out of the rain curtain less than a 100 meters to our starboard. |

the
Eems river to Leer |
|||
Om
13.00 passeren we Emden.
At 01.00 pm we pass Emden. High water Emden is at 15:30. We are making good progress and estimate we should be able to make it to Leer with this favorable wind and tide. In case we don't make it there are a few alternatives. There are several small tidal harbours along this part of the Eems but not all of them can handle a ship our size.

Past
Emden we soon reach the
imposing Sperrwerk Gandersum. This river
barrier was built 1998-2002 as storm surge barrier and to allow super
cruisers to sail to and from the Meyers shipyards upstream in
Papenburg. The barriers can raise the river level for this. There was
considerable opposition to its construction for environmental reasons. In spite of the dikes there are also nice meanders with extensive marshes. |

Tegen

Bij
the time we call the Jan
Berghaus Bridge (the first bridge up the Eems river, with
callname Leerbrucke)
our favorable tidal current is gone. The bridge towers high
over the river. Nonetheless it opens so timely that we can leave the
sails up. Bending out the window of his abode above us the bridgemaster
waves and wishes us Guthe Reise. A mile further we lower the sail and turn over port up the Leda river. Slowly we climb the current to a tiny jetty to await the Leer-lock opening. After a half hour, at 5:30 pm the impressive sea lock opens and swallows tiny Oeral Thûs. Normally this lock opens three times daily, at tide dependent times, and sometimes extra for local touring ships. |

through the city center where once ocean going vessels docked. At the
heart a part is reserved as museum harbour where we are

Like in a dream the wind and water carried us on one big wave past the birds in the Leybucht, the industrial Eemshaven, mud spitting giants, Delfzijl, the silt rich Dollard and several small picturesque harbours. Fast, to fast, but more about some of these spots on our way back to Harlingen |

We
zomer produceert heftige onweersbuien. |
We
are back in Leer in the museum harbour. Liesbeth is back at work and I
enjoy this small but interesting city till the next
weekend. This hot summer breeds severe
thunderstorms. Hellfire and brimstone It is monday the twelfth of July, a hot summer day. While helping a fellow sailor, moored aside Oeral Thûs, load his provisions, around 2 PM it quite suddenly turns dark outside. Above our heads the sky is threatening black and churning. As the wind picks up, we quickly load the last bags and seek shelter in the cabin. In a matter of minutes the calm harbour turns into a violant lake with half meter waves banging the leeboards. Sheets of rain help keep the waves down. Within a half hour the big light above is on again. The calm returns, except for the noise of sirens. Looking out the cabin I see broken branches in chestnut trees on the opposite shore. A walk reveals the severity of the freak storm. |
|||
Stormdepressie Norina trok
via Oost Nederland en met een
touch-down dwars over Leer.

Storm depression Norina
crossed Eastern
Netherlands and Germany and touched down in Leer. Hurricane winds of
190 km /hr were measured on the Jann Berghauss bridge. Windhoses struck
leaving hardly a tree in Leer untouched. More than 400 trees were
downed. Steel cabels mooring the Ocean freighter Fivelborg snapped and
she rammed the shipbuilding dock. A crane crashed on her deck. Heavens
fury had carefully placed two Linden trees guarding the 'Great Church'
along the church walls. Roofs and cars suffered. The coming week is
debris cleaning time! By some coincidence, while Leer is licking it's wounds the motorvessel Wissenschaft visits. It is an on board exposition on energy and global warming that travels throughout Germany. That evening I attend a scientific lecture on climate change. The local paper predicts: There will be more hurricanes. |

Donderdagavond

evening Liesbeth returns bij train from Leeuwarden. Friday the 16th at
7:45 AM we enter the waiting sealock. Bij 8:15 we are out on

at the Eems we coast on the gentle SE breeze and favorable
current. As the breeze grows stronger we reduce the main sail with a
double reef and a luff line. With the wind the forecast for
the
Wadden Sea changes. Thunderstorms with strong wind gusts are expected
tonight. The forecast for tomorrow is better so we decide to stop over
in the harbour Termunterzijl. |

It
is our first visit here with Oeral Thûs. When we tie up, at 12:00, the
wind is a strong 6Bft, gusting near gale and still increasing. Unexpectedly we have the whole afternoon and evening to explore the countryside. On our bikes we tour to the lovely Point of Reide and enjoy the view over the salt-marshes and water fowl. The tide is low and at the foot of the dike lies a pod of seals. Inside the dike in the Breebaartpolder is a colony of spoonbills. Bike in hand, we walk the reed flanked path through the polder amid flitting and singing reed buntings, reed pipits and sedge warblers. |

Back
at Oeral Thûs night like darkness seems to come early as a rolling
black cloud moves in from the west. Ominous continuous
thunder
resounds from the Wadden Sea. From the dike in Termunterzijl we watch
spelbound by an Armageddon-like view as the thunderstorm slowly passes
from West to East in front of the setting sun. Glad to be in the sheltered harbour and not out there in the open we toast our fortune with a frisian beerenburg and hit the bunk early. To profit from the morning tide we need to be out on the river by 6:30 AM. |

Wadvaren vereist planning | Sailing the wadden requires planning
Impressed
by nature's violence of the past days we carefully make our
plan
for the journey from Termunterzijl, over the Wadden Sea to Harlingen. The plan consists of a table listing all the high and low tide data for the planned route (see map): from Delfzijl, past the Eemshaven, the Emshorn, over shallows of the Rawad, the Zuid Oost Lauwers, Pieterburen- and Lutjewad, the Abt and last, as shallowest the Kimstergat. The table lists our estimates of the time during which these shallows are passable for us. Every area of the Wadden Sea has its own tidal scheme also dependent on wind force and direction. Even then, it's never the same as the shoals change position. Therefore we extend the calculation to include several tides to come. Just in case we miss our window. If not necessary we don't sail at night. Sometimes we stick to the marked fairway. Often, especially during rising tide we sail on compass across the shoals. |

Zaterdag 17 juli, wind Zuid eerst 3 later 6 Bft | Saturday, July 17th, wind South, first Bft 3 later 6

At 6:30 we pass the
imposing fortification like lock walls of Termunterzijl. On the still peaceful river we raise the sails. Our aim is to get to the Rawad entrance at about 10:00 AM. That way we use the outgoing tide on the Eems and the incoming tide to the Rawad shallows. Bonus of this timing is sailing at low tide. The time the Wadden are at their best. Once past the Eems harbour the wind rapidly picks up. It seems the wall of wind turbines along the Groningen coast make wind. The wind is now 5 Bft and with the main double reefed we still chase by the river buoys. Using the GPS we carefully avoid the mid-river sandbank guarded by a seal. By 9:30 we are at the first Ra buoy. Also here a sandbar extends in front of the entrance from the South at low tide. Grounding near the higher shallow areas on the Wadden Sea is generally no problem for us. However, here at the edge of the tidal river the sand banks are steep and hard and grounding here is another story. Sails down and with a wide birth we stick to the deeper channe. Then head up against the wind and the still outgoing current. By 10:15 we run out of water and drop the anchors near buoy Ra16. We use a Fisherman's anchor fore and a Bruce anchor aft, both short, about taught. This keeps us facing in the wind also when the current reverses. |
||
Volgens
6 Bft. All ships, all ships, all ships meldt een waarschuwing 6 Bft

At
12:30 we raise anchors. The sky above has darkened the wind picks up to
5 and 6Bft. The coastguard relays a weather warning. All ships, all
ships, all ships warning 6 Bft for Vlissingen (that is far in the
south). Well apparently not only in that area. Here it is also
whistling through the stays and not the predicted South East 4 but an
unfavorable South West 6. Our plan did not foresee motoring and head
banging into strong winds, waves and current. After crossing the first shallows we decide to drop the anchors again and stay put. Unplanned, our anchor spot is the same as on the trip going here five weeks earlier, just NW of buoy ZOL34. All around us high wadden shoals give protection from the North Sea. Also on the shallows the sailboat Blauwe Engel that left Leer with us is waiting and to the West of the shallows two more flat-bottom ships. As the tide rises they all lift anchor. Two head for the Eems, but one goes westward. |
||
Om 19:15 raken we de
eerste keer grond. Het wordt een rustige avond, de
wind zakt af. Wadvogels vliegen richting de droogvallende platen. Wij

At
7:15 PM we feel Oeral Thûs touching ground. The weather calms as the
wind dies. Whistling ropes are replaced by whistling wading birds as
they fly by toward the drying higher shoals. Water around the boat
gone, we pick a meal of mussels and oysters. To the North the island Rottum is more and more visible and to the North East high white buildings on Borkum stick out against the evening sky. |

Zondag,18 juli, wind Zuidelijk, 3 later 5 Bft | Sunday, July 18, wind Southerly, 3 later 5 Bft
We
Five thirty AM we're up. At six with 1m20 of water left we're sailing over smooth water on a favourable ebbing current and winding our way between the sand banks as they dry. We pass Noordpolderzijl and ride the flow of the Zuid Oost Lauwers as far as the Robbengat. Here we head into the last bit of tidal current but at the third buoy we ground Oeral Thûs. The channel has moved itself to the 'wrong' side of the buoy. It is now 8 AM and for the show we raise the anchoring ball and lower the anchor onto the hard bank, a mixture of shells and sand. Nice time for a walk over the shoals and for some reading.
| . klik voor vergroten click to enlarge |
Our first attempt to raise anchor at 1:00 PM proves premature. From the most southern bend in the Robbengat we normally leave the buoyed channel and sail our own WSW course across the flat Pieterburenwad. This time however after 1,5 mile we run aground. But by this time in the tide the tide rises rapidly and 15 minute later we are afloat and sailing. With a favorable current we can sail at 255 degrees straight toward the Spruit. Without following the meanders of the Lutjewat, we head directly for the tall yellow poles marking the military training area. Via the unmarked Poepengat we reach the Zoutkamperlaag. .
| Around 4:30 PM we sail by the Lauwersoog harbour lights. There is a rolling wave in the Zoutkamperlaag but with the tide still with us and a few tacks we reach Paessensrede and head towards the Wierumer wad. Hungry and worn we drop the anchor at 7 PM south of Engelsmanplaat near buoy WW1 a bit north of the channel in 90cm of water. We are neatly parked in one line with the church spire of Wierum to the South and the towering gas rig in the Pinkegat to the North

Maandag, 19 juli, Zuidelijk briesje. | Monday, july 19th, southerly breeze
Tegen 5
uuris net licht genoeg.
Holwerderbalg moeten we opgeven. Er staat onvoldoende water. Dus varen

Monday
morning at 5:00 the dawning light enables us, using binoculars to find
the next buoy. From the Friese wad FW 3 we attempt a shortcut acros the
shallows. Carefully monitoring the depth with a marked pole we edge
away from the channel. We have to abort. There is not enough water and
with a falling tide we have to take the route along the marked deeper
channel. By 5:50 the sun peeps over the clouds on the horizon and
visibility rapidly improves. After the detour, in the Zuiderspruit the
southerly wind is just sailable and jib loose, main sail luffed up we
glide slowly over the most shallow stretch. Here the Hoop op Zegen is
still grounded and we inch by too close for comfort. For a brief moment
we see the dagger-board lift and our hopes drop, but somehow we keep
moving on. Main and jib again full over starboard and the sun over port we flow smoothly through the Zuiderspruit, the Scheepsgat and the Danziggat passing under Ameland. At 8:15 AM we turn into the Kromme Balg. In a strong counter current we look for a suitable anchoring spot. At the Kromme Balg KB 11 we again drop anchor. The sea here is flat. In the few lines with ripples the channels and direction of the current is visible. On the sandbanks that grow around us seals are sunning. The southerly wind carries winged mainland creatures on board. Liesbeth takes a refreshing plunge from the rudder. |
||
vast liggen. We doen haasje over met de Krukel. |
The Vaarwater van de Zwarte Haan should, according to our plan, be passable from 12:45 and the shallow Kimstergat at 3:30 PM. So there is no hurry and we wait for more water as several ships pass by toward the shallow area. The Krukel, a government vessel, passes before we decide to raise anchor at 1 PM and head for the Abt. At 1:50, between Vingegat buoy 25 and 27, with only 75cm of water we glide through soft mud past the ships that came by earlier but are now grounded here. With the Krukel we play leapfrog.
Wonderrijke wereld | Wonderful world
Daar
varen richting Kimstergat. Maar dat wordt na 100 meter afgestraft. We
We liggen
klik voor vergroten click to enlarge |
Where
the Vingegat bends sharply northward to the Meep we continue straight
on over the shallow Kimstergat sandbanks. Only 100 meters on we are
abruptly stopped by a sandbank. We are stuck with the nose in only 60cm
of water. By 14:30 here is still not enough water (we need at least
75cm). We are grounded just outside the area market as unsafe anchoring
because of underground cables. By 3 PM a quick calculation using the
1/12th rule tells us that at the most 25cm of water is still to be
expected. By dragging the anchor bij hand to deeper
water
and using the anchor winch we pull her of the bank and sail back to the
Vingegat. Following the marked channel we round the higher shoals. The
Brandaris radio report surprises us. We expected the water level to be
lower than predicted but there is no deviation from the expected high
tide level. Halfway across the Kimstergat shallows, we raise the sails again and shut of the engine. With just enough water to pass over the shoals. In the light decreasing breeze we silently glide toward Harlingen, relaxing and soaking in the beautiful sunny quiet. By 5:15 PM the last wind dies. For a while we coast downstream with the current and ebbing water. When we realize we will not be able to pass the town bridges to Oeral Thûs 's home berth until 9 AM, we decide to stay out for the night. Close to the Kimstergat buoy 16 and right along the higher sand shoals we drop the anchor once more. |

Rondom
warm. Wij gaan gauw nog even in bad.
nogmaals voor
anker op het wonderrijke wad Terwijl wij in de kuip genieten en onze mossels en oesters verorberen klinkt de weersvoorspelling, “All ships, all ships, all ships, alle districten, geen verandering van betekenis.” Wat kan de wadwereld wonderrijk zijn. |

All
around the evening sky reflects pastel colours in water and silt. The
silence is emphasized by screaming and screeching as the birds reclaim
the drying banks. The wind turbine blades have stopped moving. A seal
draws a line in the smooth mirror and flaps by toward the shallows. It
is hot. Time for a refreshing bath. While we enjoy and consume our mussel and oyster meal the radio comes on with the weather forecast “All ships, all ships, all ships, all districts, no significant change.” The wadden, what a wonderful world. |
