Boortoren of windmolens | Drilling platform or windturbines?
juli 2016 Boortoren of windmolens Gasdrilling platform or windturbines | Op
| At
the Smart Energies Summit end of May in Paris Isabelle Kocher, CEO of
ENGIE International, gave a presentation entitled "The transition to
clean energy”. She discussed: “What energymix ENGIE will deliver
to consumers and the consumers will prefer in the future”. From a technological point of view, the ENGIE Group focusses on the sun and on clean gas, with significant investments in both. Also the group promotes and disperses clean energy innovation. To implement the energy transition further the group aims to strengthen local roots and to maximize contact with customers".
| Schiermonnikoog
inhabitants offer an excellent opportunity to make these words and
dreams come true. Schiermonnikoog wants a clean and sustainable energy
supply, not a drilling platform, on their near shore.
Echter,
| But,
instead, ENGIE Netherlands and the minister of Economics seem to be
implementing a different, outdated, energy policy. A policy of getting
as much gas out of the fields as possible till they are empty. What
else can be the policy behind asking and giving a licence for
exploration of a possible gasfield just north of this island. And why? The minister motivates his decision bij stating: the rules of the procedures were followed; there is not enough clean energy available yet; and a licence to explore is not automatically a licence to exploite. The motivation of ENGIE Netherlands is easy to guess.
| What could be a clean sustainable energy mix for the island Schiermonnikoog? Saving energy will be a first step. But what could the energyproduction entail? A solarplant in the polder or on the dike along the Wadden Sea together with a biogas installation in cooperation with the local farmers and maybe windturbines on the sandbank on the North West shore of the island. Does that mix appeal to the islanders and is ENGIE Netherlands willing to invest in this?
Een eiland als proeftuin. Een lonkend perspectief of een fata morgana? | An island as testing ground. A promissing perpective? Or a fata morgana?
Een aflandige wind, gelukkig? | A landwind, luckily?
febr. 2016 Een aflandige wind, gelukkig? A landwind, luckily? | In
| In
1964 there was mass Sandwich Tern mortality in the Waddensea. The
population declined sharply from 40000 nesting pairs to 600 in
1965. The decline in the 60'ties was due to chlorinated hydrocarbon
pollution in the marine environment. Pollution that came in various
ways from pesticides, burning of waste products etc. and affected the
Tern eggs. The sand shoal 'Het Griend' is now one of the spots where again many Sandwich Terns nest.
| Last year the
Omrin's waste incinerator in Harlingen released high levels of dioxins
and furans during a system failure. In one day the emission was more than the legal maximum
for a whole year. According to the expert report by 'Witteveen en Bos'
most of the dioxins luckily blew out to the Waddensea thanks to
easterly winds! | |||
| Dioxins is a collective term for a group of organic compounds, some
extremely toxic, that can be formed by the burning of chlorinated
materials (chlorinated hydrocarbons). One might well ask if such emission should not be completely forbidden.
Nu wekt men zogenaamde groene stroom op via afvalverbranding. | At the moment politicians
are discussing solutions of the emissions of dioxins and
hydrochloric acid and the unrest among the Harlinger population. For what reason do the Frisian municipalities and province choose the incineration of municipal, construction and demolition waste rather than separation and recycling? Now they incinerate the waste to produce so called 'green electricity'.
| Many consider raising the pipe will help solve the problem. Harmful emissions would not come down as quickly and would be more diluted.
| However, where then will they end up? The incinerator is situated directly by the Wadden Sea dike. Will these materials go to the marine ecosystem and the shallows of the Wadden Sea? Will they then accumulate in the food chain and end up in Sandwich Tern eggs again or in the fish or mussels on our own dinner dish?
Vrij Spel | Free Play | |||
aug. 2015 Vrij spel Free play | Griend
| Griend,
is a little island in the Wadden Sea. It is located 10 km from the
deeper North Sea and halfway between the barrier islands and the
mainland. Located along the tidal channels Vliestroom and Blauwe Slenk.
In the Middle Ages it was still big enough to harbour a monastry. Circa
1800 it was only used as pasture. These days Griend is a European nesting spot for Sandwich terns, Arctic tern and Common tern. Each summer 'bird-rangers' keep them from being disturbed and count the nesting pairs.
| Rottumeroog is a barrier island at the
edge of Wadden and North Sea and the river Eems channels. Also
here monastries played an important role . Circa 1350 the island was
owned bij two monastries. There followed a period of pirates. From the
18th C to 1965 it is public property. Special sherrifs guarded the
island and particularly, collected the valuable beachcomb items. During the 20th C efforts focussed on protection measures. Cribs were constructed and dune forming helped bij planting Marram. However, after years of debate between nature protection NGO's, the Government and private local interests the policy changed. In 2002 all artificial forms of protection stopped. The dynamic forces of the Wadden Sea are allowed to freely shape the area. “Vry spel” it is called, literally “Free play”.
Eerst
verplaatst. | klik voor vergroten, click to enlarge | At
first the opposition predicted the vanishing of Rottumeroog in the
Eems. This has not happened. The island has 'wandered'a bit SE-ward
while dunes in the NW erode. The sherrifs house has succumbed to the
waves. The iron beacon of Rottumeroog is moved. For decades now the
island is an important nesting ground for many bird species and a
stopover for migrating birds. Also here bird-rangers keep them from
being disturbed and count the nesting pairs.
| To
protect nestinggrounds on Griend, circa 1980, a sand dike was
constructed on its North and West sides. Most of the dike materials
have now vanished. The Wadden Sea's dynamic forces had 'free play'.
Water and wind gnaw at the North and West sides and deposit the
material, in part, on the island. Tide and wind driven currents carry
off the rest. These important European nesting grounds for the terns, a natioanal responsibility, are succumbing. Island- managers are devising a new protection scheme. Looking for the limits to too 'free play'.
| klik voor vergroten, click to enlarge | Typical for the Wadden
Sea is the variety in ecosystem created in an area dominated by the
continuous dynamics of wind, water and sediment. Here you can follow
the shaping and vanishing of islands, creeks and channels daily, as it
were. This, with the unpredictability of these forces, makes this area
so unique and valuable. This is why it is a World Nature Heritage
Een wereld verschil | A world apart
april 2015 Een wereld verschil A world apart | Droogvallende
| Tidal
mudflats to be reclaimed and drained for seed potato cultivation. Water
to dispose of sewage. A huge area to explore freely for gas and
minerals. Our way of thinking about the Wadden Sea area has changed over the last five decades. Happily, our activities in the area follow suit. In 2015 it is no longer thinkable that unpurified waste water from the potato flour industry could be drained directly into the Wadden Sea. And, though seed potatos are nice, the avocets were even nicer, and thus the salt marshes of Noord Fryslân stayed part of the tidal area. Economic gain from gas and saltmining is a tougher nut to crack. But its on the agenda.
| For the Wadden Sea growing awareness of what we would lose by dams to
the islands and land reclamation in the tidal zone turned the tide. The
ensuing action and education campaigning about the special ecological
values of the area, now have resulted in the status of World Heritage
Area for this tidal sea and its mudflats. Information, education and continuous campagning does change our way of thinking and acting. Can those forces be applied elsewhere
| A stay in southern India confronts one with an utterly different attitude to water and environment. Thoughtlessly waste is dropped on the spot or in the water. Even the fishermen seem not to be aware of the effect of the plastics in the water. Busses, motor-riksja's, and factories severely pollute the air. Toilets and a proper sewage system are not available to many.
| One would almost think that the harmfull effects for people, plants and animals are unknown; that nature and the environment are not topics in school in India. A recent Indian newspaper heads: 'Airpollution in India worst in the world'. But most people seem to accept their situation as destiny and make no attempt to do what they could do easily.
landelijk Centre for Environmental Education met
subcentra voor de verschillende regio's. Men geeft cursussen voor
we have an international Wadden Sea School, a network of organisations
that offer educational programmes about the Wadden Sea. In India there is a national Centre for Environmental Education with subcentres for the diverse regions. This Centre offers courses for teachers, teaching and information materials. On various fronts they make attempts, but slowly, towards environmental sustainability. The current government has a major cleanup for India in its policy but economic productivity along with consumption are also growing rapidly. Plastic bags and bottles, leftover building materials everywhere along the roads and in rivers illustrate that the problems seem to be growing faster than the solutions. And, no one seems to be aware.
Versnelling
| klik voor vergroten, click to enlarge | Speeding up awareness, action and education campaignes is necessary to turn the tide for men and nature in India. Wild knuffelen | Cuddling the Wild
| Grey seals have been proven guilty bij DNA research of wounding and killing harbour porpoises in the North Sea and Wadden Sea. The seals rip a meal of nutritious blubber from their still living prey. The awful wounds give a new perspective to the Wadden Sea's favorite cute and cuddly animal.
Nu
enkele honderden dode zeehonden geteld. | klik voor vergroten, click to enlarge | The
seals may be at the top of the foodchain, they are vulnerable. Only 14
years ago a seal-virus decimated about 60% of the population. The virus
appeared near the Danish island Anholt and spread to the seal
population in the whole Wadden Sea. A repeat scenario seems to be
unfolding at the moment. The first reports of dead seals came from
Denmark, then from Germany and now also from the Dutch Wadden Sea. In
recent months hundreds of dead seals have been counted in the Wadden
Sea. That development has rekindled the debate about seal refuge and treatment centers. Should we shelter sick seals? Nurse them? Vaccinate them and return them to their wildernis? The common seal at the moment counts about 5000 in the Dutch Wadden Sea. Their pups are born in june and july. The pups of the grey seal are born in december on the shoals and beaches. They have that furcoat and can not swim the first weeks.
| klik voor vergroten, click to enlarge | So what do you do with, Christmas still in mind, when you come across such a little furcoated seal (crying like a baby) at the beach or salt marsh?
Denemarken,
is.
Duizenden zieke dieren opvangen is schier onmogelijk. | Denmark,
Germany and the Netherlands made an agreement in 1992 how to handle
sick seals. Seal shelters like in Pieterburen and a self appointed
“Sealmom” you no longer find in Denmark and Germany. The governments
there have broadly disseminated information about why sheltering is not
always the preferred route. And that an animal-friendly death at times
is better. In the Netherlands there is a huge gap between the different
organizations on the issue of sheltering sick seals. But giving asylum to thousands of sick animals is hardly possible. Along the shore there are now signs with instructions what to (not) do if you do come across a sick seal.
| The
seal was and is a measuring gauge for the health of the Wadden Sea
ecosystem. Hopefully the population is healthy enough to survive this
new virus onslaught. Wildernis can be harsh. But the time of cuddling the cute seals is past. The individual animal deserves our respect.
Klanken en Kakofonie | Clanging and Cacophony
nov. | When splashing waves become ripples and the last ripple goes dumb, you hear the shellfish on the Wadden Sea floor : “Pssst, prrr, blupblup, pssst.” From their siphons spout little fountains above the drying mudflats.
(luister *). | For
marine life sound is of vital importance. Sound is carried much
better and further by water than through the air. But visibility in the
sea is limited, very much so in the Wadden Sea. So sound is most
important to survive. Sea-mammals such as the seal and harbour porpoise
use sound for orientation, communication and to locate prey. Also
whales, squid and shrimps produce and use sound.. (listen *)
| That marine life uses sound is no news. However, there is increasing evidence that the noise we produce below sea level interferes with their vital activities.
In
“The Impact of Ocean Noise Pollution on Marine Biodiversity” geeft Dr.
zee geproduceerde lawaai. | In “The Impact of Ocean Noise Pollution on Marine Biodiversity” Ph.D. L. Weilgart concludes that of at least 55 species of marine animals it has been shown that they are adversely impacted by human noise.
| From India the question reached us whether there was research about the effects of noise on marine life in the Wadden Sea. The asker sent a link to an article on the effects of shipping noise on wales. The article poses the question, “What would happen in the ocean if we went quiet”. Human industry is now noisy enough to drown out whale songs.
| Back
in 1995 the Wadden (protection) Society published “The bottom of the
Wadden Sea” about the negative effects of submarine sound, noise from
seismic exploration, dredging, and shipping, on seals, fish and
crustaceans. | |||
| If the European
countries want to reach “good environmental conditions at
sea” in 2020, the agreed goal of the Framework Directive Marine
Strategy. And sound is part of that goal! They will have to take
immediate action, starting 2015.
Een rijke Waddenzee | A rich Wadden Sea
sept. | Countless lug-worms and honeycomb worms dot the endless ripple- and wave-patterns in the sand as far as one can see. Sun rays paint the clouds as in a kaleidoscope. Every moment it changes and yet the ingredients are the same. Your toes in the mud, your nose in the silty air. Thousands, no ten thousands of common eiders sit on the dried east side of the Ballast-sands at low tide. Seals rest on the sandbank on the opposite side, some are hunting for fish in the deep tidal trench. Sails raised we silently glide in between the banks. What opulence to enjoy and it is free, no permit needed!
In
| Underneath
the mud and sand is more richness, gas and salt. They are deep down,
but nevertheless economically attractive to exploit. Salt mining
underneath mainland Friesland has resulted in sinking ground-levels.
Therefore, the salt now is to be extracted from below the Wadden
Sea. More precisely, from underneath these Ballast-sands. Tidal sands
that fall dry relatively long and therefore of extra importance for
resting and foraging birds.
| The secretary of State of the department of Economic affairs, who also
has the portfolio Nature affairs just issued a license for salt mining
here in the Wadden Sea underneath the Ballast- sands. Reports about the sinking sandbanks and the consequences for availability of food for the birds could not tip the scale the other way. Apparently it is irrelevant that the salt could come from elsewhere. The short term economic gain outweighs the risks for nature and the importance of food for the birds.

Waddenfeest | Waddenparty
| klik voor vergroten click to enlarge | You stick in the mud, you lose your balance and land in the mire. You feel the Wad. You wade through creeks and channels following the guide, slip and land on your nose. You smell, you taste the Wad. You marvel at crabs, shrimp and the myriad of neat little lugworm piles spread over the drying flats. You sense it: the Wad is alive. You intensely experience the light and skydome filling the openness above the wadflats. The wadfeeling overcomes you.
flat sailingboat slips out of the channel onto the edge of the drying
flat. The crew wants to walk to shore. Boots on they step over board
wearing white trousers, white sneakers in one hand. It is a short trip
because boots suck firmly in wad-mud. Second try; now barefoot, pants rolled above the knee. “How nice! I feel soft muck slipping between my toes” remarks one sailor to the other.
vergeten. | A
school class struggles to keep up with the wadflat-excursion
guide. Departure is filled with alarm screeching. “I'm going back” says
one, “Come on now” replies a classmate. A teacher reaches a
helping hand. Later they return, alarm screaming has turned into loud
laughter and from hair to toe they are mud spattered. The departure? Is
forgotten. What stays is the silty smell of the Wad in clothes and hair and mostly an unforgetable experience.
| Home

themselves they feel the mire seeping between their toes, sense the

Barričres voor migranten | Barriers for migrants
mei 2014 Migratie Migration | De
plaats. Of toch wel? | The old defense walls in Kornwerderzand with barbed wire are not a cheerful view. The banner World Fish Migration day seems out of place. Or is it?
In
Nederland hebben we stevige barričres opgeworpen. Beschermd achter die
barričres wanen we ons veiliger. Het zijn barričres waar een migrant
niet zomaar door of overheen komt. We doen daarmee in zeker opzicht
| In the Netherlands we have firm barriers. Protected behind these barriers we think we are safer. Migrants cannot pass these easily. In certain respects we match the barbed wire defenses around the Spanish enclave on the North shore of Morocco.
| The
separation of the Zuider Sea from the Wadden Sea with a truly solid
barrier dam in 1932 exterminated the herring and anchovy in the
Zuider-Sea. The EU Water Framework directive, the Rhine treaty and the agreements to build a network of protected nature areas (Natura 2000) already for decades require that we, the Netherlands, make it possible for fish to pass our barriers. Enactment of these directives and treaties is taking many fish generations. Fishery-country, the Netherlands, still has much to do to meet the obligations.
| But there is good news.
Environmental NGO's in collaboration with fishery organizations,
provinces and municipalities have designed a fish migration river. It
is a special river through the Afsluitdijk just for fish to travel from
salt to fresh water and back. Realizing the plan will be very
expensive. Just making a 'solid' plan took many millions of Euro's. But also the Water Management boards are busy to transform their dikes, dams and locks into barriers that fish can pass. At the moment lock keepers and fisherman in close cooperation are bringing fish like eel and stickleback over the dike, manually!
| klik voor vergroten, click to enlarge | The
World Fish Migration day draws global attention to the worldwide need
of migratory fish. Especially delta 's like the Netherlands play a key role in fish migration and the survival of species. This, in turn, is important to feed our species as well. Perhaps a kind of safety not everybody will think of immediately. Breaking down barriers, a matter of life or death for fish, turns out to be vital own interest. In April we biked four days along Dutch water barriers and admired the many defense lines along the Wadden Sea, the North Sea, the former Zuider Sea and the river IJssel. All of them are technical highlights. Impregnable barriers, not only for threatening water. Will the measures to make fish migration possible in the Netherlands be in time for the eel, the river lamprey, the three thorned stickleback and all the other migratory species.
| Is it not high time for new sustainable concepts for our life saving barriers?
Hadhdhunmathi en Schiermonnikoog | Hadhdhunmathi and Schiermonnikoog
apr 2014 Eilanden Islands | Beide
| Both
are tiny dots on our blue planet, inhabited and dependent on tourism.
They are a world apart. Yet, both have the same worries. Worries
described and accentuated again by the new IPCC report on climate
change. What will be the consequences for such islands. What should be
done? Mohamed Nasheed, president of the Maldives, already proposed: we shall relocate all 350,000 inhabitants to other nations. Will they be welcome and where? Hadhdhunmathi is one of the many atolls of the Maledives. These atolls are about 7ft (2-3 m) above sea level at their highest point. The Maldives lie open in the vast Indian Ocean! Schiermonnikoog has sand dunes rising to 50ft (15-20m.), extensive beaches and is surrounded bij a shallow sea.
| Schiermonnikoog was visited by family with their yacht Gaia in 2000. Since then, step by step, they have sailed westward more then half a globe and now, April 2014, they have reached Hadhdhunmathi. On Schiermonnikoog we used the tidal difference to tie Gaia up to the dock. Standing in the Wadden mud with worms and shrimps, we repaired the propeller. No such mudflats on Hadhdhunmathi. Coral, rocks, white beaches, palms, tropical fish and squid.

| In
general the population on Hadhdhunmathi does not seem to
worry much about the consequences of climate change, global warming or
sea level, even though the topic is discussed in the schools. On
Hadhdhunmathi no sign of wind turbines, biobased energy or debates
about being self supporting on energy, although they also use energy
for cars, water making, air conditioning. Do they count on Australia
that has already offered them refugee status in case the rising sea
makes their low lying islands uninhabitable? Or do they count on the
more energy consuming parts of the world to solve the problem on time? The Waddensea islands, including Schiermonnikoog have set a goal to become self supporting in energy. At the same time there is a debate about the effects on tourism from windturbines piercing what now is an open horizon. What are the most effective sources and sustainable possibilities for our energy needs? How do we make the switch?
Een citaat van onze reporter op de Malediven: “So these low lying islands of coral rubble and sand will disappear and with it the living coral that surrounds them as the water warms and becomes less alkaline. And it will not take a hundred years. Yesterday we went on a picture taking session along the beachless west coast of the island that faces Africa, 2000 or more miles away, whose east coast reefs we are anchored off of. All these islands are, still, protected by a largely dead reef on which the surf pounds. The reef we walked on is close to the water at low tide and although craggy quite flat meaning that once the tide rises a little one does not have a lot of time to return. The rocks get slippery when wet! Tidal range is a tad more than a meter max. It is a funny tide going from practically no variation at all to 1.2 m now as the moon is nearly full. It would take only fractions of a meter of rising sea for the surf to be beating up the islands above the reef every day. They will all be denuded soon, drying reefs without a palm or coconut crab to be seen. Negative? Yes, without a doubt but quite possibly very realistic. It seems to me that achieving a climatically benign future, a goldilock scenario, will depend on the Chinese and possibly the Indians making the right decisions. And soon! I worry about the Chinese making right decisions as I perceive them in general not giving a Tinker's damn about coconut crabs or colourful coral particularly when I see what they eat and what they believe in. Roasted scorpions, shark fin soup, bird's nest soup, Rhino horn aphrodisiacs! As if they need aphrodisiacs! For Gaia's sake! On them the future of the planet hangs? Our only hope is that the smog in Being gets so bad that it becomes impossible to live in their many humongous and badly polluted cities and that they will then have to turn en masse to nuclear power. I hope they do it in time.” | To cite our reporter from the Maledives: “So these low lying islands of coral rubble and sand will disappear and with it the living coral that surrounds them as the water warms and becomes less alkaline.
| The
question 'Will change be in time?' is alive. The latest IPCC report is
not optimistic. They mention even more warming then before:: “ if policies do not change the concentrations of greenhouse gasses may rise to above 450 ppm near 2030 and rise to 730-1300ppm at the end of the century. That could result in a temperature rise of 3-5 degree C. “ How the cilmate and the oceans will react is maybe not totally clear. But we cannot do nothing and take the risk of being wrong. Low lying islands and in cases like the Maldives, whole nations, are the front line of what is at stake.
Lijnenspel | Play of Lines
mrt 2014 Lijnen Lines |
Waddenlandschap,
landschap van horizon en breed uitgemeten luchten. Zee, strand,
wadplaten, zelfs dijken, horizontaal uitgestrekt, beeldvullend.
Waddenlandscape,
landscape of the horizon and wide open skies. Sea, beaches, tidal
shoals, even dikes stretched horizontally as far as you can see.
That creates space and and openness. Even the upright lighthouse
emphasizes the horizotal character of this landscape. This is an ideal playground for Aeolus to blow. Everyone likes some wind, a breeze to fill the sails or tail wind when biking. As long as Aeolus doesn't blow too hard he is a welcome companion. He supplies usable energy to sail from Harlingen to Terschelling, energy which can also be converted to electricity. Aeolus gives sustainable energy, free. Wind generated power is said to be green and clean. Thus, the kind of energie source that is ideal to replace the older not so clean and nonrenewable sources. However, windturbines change the lines of the landscape. Their motion emphasizes new vertical lines in this horizontal open waddenlandscape. It started with scattered turbines as extra landmarks. Gradually they increased in number and size. Along the Frisian shore, discriminating which turbine is which, is now difficult. Is it Harlingen, or Sexbierum? Viewed from the Uithuizerwad, it seems a modern gate fencing stretches along the horizon to the Eemshaven. The coast of Niedersachsen is dotted with many turbines. And, if the Dutch Energy Accord is implemented there are even more turbines to come, along the Afsluitdijk or to the North of the Wadden Sea islands. These vertical elements increasingly break up the horizontal landscape. Today the sky and the sea still fill the wide scene. Openness still characterizes the wadden. Is the new play of lines, the loss of natural beauty, the price we have to pay for sustainable energy? Or, wil there be room to choose alternative locations and energy sources so that we can preserve this Wadden Sea area where heaven and earth fill the stage. |

2014 Spagaat Dilemma |
Spagaat:
De visie in het te tekenen document luidt: Migratory birds find lasting refuge along the East Atlantic Flyway from northern breeding areas to their key Wadden Sea stopover and to the African coastline, and inspire and connect people for future generations.
Dilemma:
protect or damage On februari 4th, 2014, ministers of the three Wadden Sea countries, Denmark, Germany and Holland, sign a special document to protect the migratory bird routes. Protection they want to share with all countries along the routes these birds take from Afrika to Siberia. At the same time the representative of the Dutch government has to decide whether or not to grant permission for salt mining underneath the Wadden Sea. Salt mining implies a great risk for mudflats to vanish. Mudflats that are of crucial importance for the migratory birds as feeding areas. The vision in the document to sign: Migratory birds find lasting refuge along the East Atlantic Flyway from northern breeding areas to their key Wadden Sea stopover and to the African coastline, and inspire and connect people for future generations. You can find the document at http://www.waddensea-worldheritage.org and http://www.waddensea-secretariat.org (12th trilateral governmental conference, Tonder).
